The meeting was funny. Not as funny as the AGM for choir on Wednesday, where they gave a designated 5 minute slot for greeting the people on your left and your right ... but still funny. I lost it about two and a half hours into this SMD meeting this evening (in terms of concentration) - there was too much German and we were discussing vision and trying to come up with questions to be answered in our monthly Berlin-wide meetings like "Why is there suffering if God is meant to be good?" and "Is the Bible trustworthy?" and "Did the resurrection really happen?" ... those were the ones I voted for from a complete pile and I was pleased that they were the majority's choice as well :-)
I also saw Sex and the City the movie today with Olivia ... it was so much fun, gave me just the same pleasure as seeing Mamma Mia although unlike that it did throw up the dilemmas I had that stopped me watching the OC ... hmmm ... not sure how much sex on tv I can stomach, quite honestly, and that's not (just) because I'm a prude ...
And I saw the Changeling (der fremde Sohn) last night. I was not impressed. It was far to gratuitous in all senses - the violence, the Angelina-worship, the lack of depth in the presentation of the corruption of the LAPD ... and I'm really hoping these criticisms are valid even though I didn't see the film in English...
This week is going to be BUSY. But I am loving the fact that I have rediscovered how to work iTunes. Last week I bought both some geeky choral stuff AND Mega Elvis the album (YES) for what seemed like not much money. And today I bought a song which had been going round in my head for years since our Christmas together-Berlin-SMD-evening called "Mary did you know" ... not a great song probably if you're critical but I like it. And it also puts into words the inexpressability [or whatever] of God. There are some words in the song that just blow me away the more I think about the nature of language: and how the character of God can only be described with words, yet how they are just totally unable to describe him ... and so how the names the Bible has for God try to overcome this barrier by loading them with historical, emotional, aural, poetic and religious significance (amongst others) The last verse of it goes like this:
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
is Lord of all creation?
Did you know that your baby boy
will one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy
is heaven's perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you're holding
is the great I AM.
